Into the Metaverse World
The metaverse represents a realm where individuals connect with one another and where people and objects are interconnected. It's a convergence of boundless imagination with advanced technology, blurring the lines between virtuality and reality. Within the metaverse, individuals can actualize their imaginings, and virtual entities intertwine with our real selves, creating an alternate version of ourselves.
Metaverse, from the Past to the Present
Throughout history, humans have used drawings of three-dimensional shapes on flat surfaces to interpret and create imaginary worlds. Today, with the rapid advancement of computer technology, the concept of a metaverse has emerged, where computers perceive and create virtual worlds. By examining the evolution of devices used by humans, from embodying three-dimensional shapes to modern head-mounted displays (HMDs) used in the current metaverse, we can trace mankind's evolving desire to bring imaginary worlds to life.
Charles Wheatstone’s Stereoscope (1838)
The first reflective stereoscope that achieved binocular parallax using two photos and a mirror.
David Brewster’s Lenticular Stereoscope (1850)
A portable stereoscope developed by simplifying and miniaturizing the structure of existing stereoscopes with lenses.
Morton Heilig’s Sensorama (1962)
An early virtual reality simulator that offers various sensory experiences such as sight, hearing, smell, and touch.
Ivan Sutherland’s HMD (1968)
A virtual reality system designed to respond to changes in the user’s gaze through a head-mounted display.
View Master (1980)
A device designed to display film photos in 3D shapes through projection after inserting a relevant circular reel (film) into its main body.
SEGA VR (1993)
The first gaming virtual reality headset featuring an LCD screen
Nintendo Virtual Boy (1995)
A 32-bit processor home game console that provides virtual reality gaming experiences through its mountable design.
Understanding Stereoscopic Perception
Exploring the principles of binocular parallax and the perception of a three-dimensional world using two eyes
A person's eyes are typically spaced about 6.5 cm apart horizontally. This separation results in each eye receiving slightly different visual information, known as binocular parallax. This difference in perspective is what allows us to perceive depth and distance, contributing to our sense of three-dimensionality.
Understanding Distance & Spatial Perception
Exploring the principles of stereo vision and how computers perceive the world
The human visual system relies on binocular parallax to gauge distances to objects. Similarly, computers can measure distances using a technique that involves finding corresponding points in two images taken from different viewpoints. This method calculates the visual disparity between the two images, establishes the correspondence between them, and employs triangulation. By capturing multiple images using this approach, it becomes possible to calculate coordinates in a 3D space based on the derived distance values, enabling the perception of spatial relationships.
Exploring the Principles: Vision Recognition Technology
Vision recognition technology involves extracting meaningful information from visual inputs using computers and systems, which can then be applied across various domains. For instance, it can identify objects in the environment, allowing for the safe operation of self-driving cars., Additionally, it can also be utilized in fields such as security system authentication by recognizing people’s faces.

Visualizing the Metaverse
Principles Exploration: Modeling and Rendering, Visualization Process of Metaverse
Modeling refers to the creation of virtual stereoscopic objects within a 3D space. It involves shaping and structuring a subject in the virtual environment. Rendering, on the other hand, involves enhancing the modeling data by adding elements such as texture, color, lighting, and shading. This process aims to make the virtual objects and environments more realistic and visually appealing in the metaverse.
Utilizing IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit)
Exploring the principles: Inertial measurement unit (IMU)
The IMU is a sensor device used to measure various parameters of motion and orientation in three-dimensional space. It plays a crucial role in recognizing and controlling the movement of objects. The IMU typically consists of three main sensors.
Acceleration sensor
The acceleration sensor can measure an object's linear movement by detecting changes in its velocity, vibration, or launch strength.
Gyro sensor
The gyro sensor measures an object's angular velocity across three axes, allowing it to determine the degree of rotation.
Geomagnetic sensor
The geomagnetic sensor measures the compass direction by detecting the strength and orientation of the Earth’s magnetic field. Additionally, it can be utilized to correct errors in the gyro sensor's readings.
Encounting Generative AI
Generative AI is an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that generates new content similar to existing content such as text, audio, and images. Unlike traditional AI that analyzes data and patterns, generative AI creates novel outputs by learning from and comparing existing data. It gives rise to new creations by leveraging comparative learning with existing datasets.
